A step back in time to La Alberca

La Alberca's Paza Mayor
Perhaps the most enchanting step back in time I took on my 2009/2010 Europe trip was the village of La Alberca in Spain. I was staying nearby while volunteering at Pueblo Inglés (from which I have many memories but have not written much, except a brief post, Consulting My Pillow in La Alberca).

In Spain, every village has its own distinct design. My friend
Lisa Ch, sporting the La Alberca village ring we both bought there
(this pic from later that year, when we reconnected in NYC)
Anyways, it was with interest that I stumbled across this enchanting post by a traveller who has been there more than once, and though that I'd share it.

"When my parents came to visit in Madrid last year, they brought with them some of my old photos, a box of a few hundred slides I’d set aside years ago. It was a random sampling of the uncounted thousands of Kodachromes and Fujichromes I have sitting in the not-so-archival environment of my parent’s damp basement in Toronto.

There are a lot of things I prefer about digital photography over film, but film has digital beat when it comes to looking at old photographs. You get to hold the actual original thing, for starters, and you can see it without having to plug anything in. Slides can’t be perfectly copied in a keystroke, they’re one of a kind. And for that same reason, you see them only once in a while. They get put into deep storage and get forgotten about until they surface sometime later, like artefacts from the past.

There was one slide in particular that caught me eye. I took it out of the plastic sleeve and held it up to the window. My uncle Miguel had died the year before, but in the image, taken some twenty-five years ago, he looked not much older than I am now. We were in a village called La Alberca with my aunt and an old woman we met while wandering around..." [read more on Spain by Mike Randolf].

It's a great story.

Mike also has some great photos, they are really worth a look.

Consulting My Pillow in La Alberca

I am currently just outside of a small village in Spain called La Alberca volunteering with a program called Pueblo Ingles. Pictured below is the venue -- I am living in a little villa like the one in the background, sharing with a Spaniard.
The reason I say I am ¨consulting my pillow¨is that this is one of the Spanish idioms I have learned... it is the equivalent of ¨sleeping on it¨ in English. I do not know how to say this in Spanish though, as Spanish is forbidden here! These amazing Spanish students have signed up to spend a full week in total immersion in the English language, from dawn to dusk, and more (they even have to speak English in the bar at night!). Gutsy folk, and I admire them. My role is to have conversations in English. Period.
This is the town of Avila that we stopped at for a bio break along the way (we are a 4 hour bus ride north of Madrid).... note the old town wall! Below is a roadside monument of some sort by the town.
These last two pics are of the flamenco demonstration we had in Madrid at Casa Patas, the day before getting on our bus, after a welcome reception. Awesome!!!!
That´s all for now, as there is one computer here shared by all, and time for me to give someone else here a turn....

Calvalcade of the Magi

Last night I went to see Barcelona's wonderful Three Kings Parade, or the Calvalcade of the Magi. The route went within a few blocks of where I am staying and you could feel the excitement as everyone gathered. For the Catalan children, this is their Christmas, so the energy was wonderful.

This first picture shows the police horses, I think their costumes are just rainjackets. Heh. The rest is fantastic. From the music and lights, to the camels and coal (for the naughty children) it was truly magical. Now, I shall let the pictures speak for themselves....

This last picture, above, is of one of the kings, I suppose.
What an amazing and magical parade. And what a privilege to witness it. Cool and groovy. Awesome too....

Back in Barcelona

I have been in 3 countries so far this year! On January 1st I flew from Athens, Greece to Barcelona, Spain - via Milan, Italy ;-)
I have arrived safely in Barcelona late last night. Staying with the same person as before (Mabel - now an old friend!), but in a new flat, with the cat population doubled from my last stay. I'm here for 10 days. Today I slept in, then went out to have a "bikini" and picked up some food. Now I am out to explore the new area I am in. More soon...

Canadian Parliamentary Cats and feral cats in general

I did not know about Canadian Parliament's feral cats until today.... I suppose if I'd ever been to Ottawa, I would have seen them, been curious, and learned more... but, alas, that trip is still a goal.... anyways, very cool story. There's a line in the story that has me itching to make a snide remark, but I am controlling myself.... (think icy hearts)....

I also didn't know much about feral cats period, until I read about a cool family in Spain who provides a home to a little colony (enjoyed several funny cat stories...). This actually adds a lot to my knowledge that will inform my travels through so much of Europe where there are cats everywhere ;-)

Barcelona shoe sales are a July happening!

So.... surfing on my travel destinations and I find this post: Shoe for Every Occasion: Barcelona Shops. Now I'm not really going on a shopping vacation, but, wait, then I read this: A pair of sandals from Casas will start at around €50 and go steeply up from there. For deals wait until July when the sales happen. Ah, seems my trip is perfect timing. It would be fun to pick up a fun pair of sandals or Europe-fashion-savvy-unsneakers....

I will see the Tour de France first hand!!!

I can't believe my luck! The Tour de France is going through Barcelona this year, and it is when I am there!!!! This is so totally awesome. I am a serious couch-potato fan. Stage 6 ends in Barcelona on July 9th, and Stage 7 leaves Barcelona leaves on July 10th. Soooooooooo cool! I was looking up the schedule and route map to see if I could travel to one of the stages, but they are bringing it to me!! I'll just have to take the subway and then walk somewhere.... I wonder if I'll see Bobke around town? and I wonder if he will have hair again?

Random reflections

Random thoughts from a week like no other:
  • I walk past my bookshelf tonight and find this title staring out at me: Barcelona, by Robert Hughes. I just LOVE how my bookshelf does that. Probably picked it up a few years ago second hand and never read it. Sweet!!
  • Why is pizza delivered cold a bad thing, and cold pizza in the morning is one of the most wonderful things in the world?
  • They jacked up one of the cranes at the construction site across the street - damn, I missed it! I wanted to watch so I could see how they did it.
  • I wonder if the crane operators like moving porta-potties around just for fun, or if there is some logical reason for relocating them every day this week.
  • I giggled loudly once as the guy attaching the chain around a porta-pottie took a moment to check there was no one inside, just before they lifted it up. good lord, i hope they never forget.
  • 7 days ago Europe was a vague idea, and today I have 2 months accomodation booked in 2 of the most fabulous cities in the world (Barcelona and Paris)
  • I was exhausted at the start of the week, and energized at the end
  • I love the sun, and can't believe it will really snow tomorrow
  • I loved hearing the honking of Canada Geese and they flew by my apartment tonight
  • I love google, I refound my fav cleaning lady, I need a rescue! help arrives tomorrow... I shall work on my laptop while the cleaning demons whirl around me

Barcelona in July

How exciting! I have just fired off an email to book a great place in Barcelona for the month of July. It's a room in an apartment shared with a woman who does this regularly. There is a roof-top deck! And it sounds awesome. Will cost me about the same as a month's rent here. I'm excited to hear back that I got it, and to get the deposit paid. Sweet!!
Update: got it!! Just have to wire the deposit. And the cat's name is Mickey...
